If you’ve been struggling with anxiety, stress, or depression then the phrase “peace of mind” might sound like something from a fairytale. But I can assure you that peace of mind really does exist. And not only that, it’s something that you can accomplish in your own life.

Some people mistakenly believe that peace of mind is something that you only experience when things in your life are trouble-free, but that’s not true. Peace of mind and focus go hand-in-hand. Therefore, when you learn how to stay focused and gain control of your thoughts, you are able to experience peace of mind. If you lack the ability to focus, it’s difficult to experience peace. The more you develop this habit, the easier it will be to live in a state of constant peace.

What is peace of mind?

If you look up the phrase “peace of mind” on the Merriam Webster website it defines it as, “a feeling of being safe or protected”. However, I believe that the British definition found on collinsdictionary.com is more accurate, “the absence of worry”. It’s achieving a calm state of mind regardless of your situation and circumstances.

The most important step to achieving peace is to acknowledge the fact that you have control over your mind, including your thoughts and how you respond to others. If you refuse to take responsibility for your reactions to others then you will never live in peace. However, when you accept that you are in control of how you respond to people and situations you can begin to make progress in this area instead of living controlled by things that are happening around you.

Here are 7 tips to help you stay focused in order to experience peace of mind.

  1. Learn to practice mindfulness meditation.

If you have been leery of trying meditation because you aren’t “spiritual” then you should know that scientific studies are being conducted that back the benefits of meditation. One such example is a 2018 study titled “Cognitive Aging and Long-Term Maintenance of Attentional Improvements Following Meditation Training” which states, “The present study is the first to offer evidence that intensive and continued meditation practice is associated with enduring improvements in sustained attention and response inhibition, with the potential to alter longitudinal trajectories of cognitive change across the lifespan.” That’s fancy wording for basically saying that the study was promising in showing that doing meditation helps to improve your brain’s ability to focus now and in the future.

While some people use meditation for spiritual purposes it doesn’t have to be used that way. The physical and emotional benefits are something that anyone can benefit from.

Mindfulness meditation teaches you how to be present in the moment. This allows you to push out the worrying and nagging thoughts that creep into your mind. It helps you take control of anxiety and stress. This allows you to experience peace even if things in life aren’t perfect. And the physical benefits are numerous.

  1. Limit your use of social media.

There are things that are good about social media, but there are also lots of studies that show the ways that it can be harmful to the mental health of its users. The use of social media tends to cause us to compare the good, the bad, and the ugly of our lives with the highlight reel that friends and family are sharing. The messy parts of your life are never going to compare with the highlights that other people are sharing. Therefore, if you are struggling with peace and constantly find yourself comparing yourself to others on social media it can be best to stay off the platforms.

Social media is also a distraction. It feeds our FOMO (fear of missing out) craving. With access to social media on our phones, it’s easy to be tempted into stopping what you are trying to work on or think about in order to “check” what’s going on with friends and family.

  1. Let go of the past.

Getting hung up on the things that have happened in the past make it difficult to stay focused on the present and the future. Focusing our attention on things that we cannot change makes it difficult to maintain peace of mind. If there is something from the past that you can correct, then do it. Otherwise, it’s time to forgive others, forgive yourself, and move on.

  1. Don’t be easily offended.

It is much easier to maintain peace of mind when you let things roll off your back. If you take offense at every little thing that other people do and say, you will remain in a constant state of frustration. Your thoughts will feel out of control and you will quickly lose your peace. However, if you focus on believing the best in others you are shifting your thoughts which will make finding peace much easier.

  1. Choose your battles carefully.

If you make it your personal mission to correct everyone who is doing something you don’t agree with you are going to live in a constant state of strife. And it will be near impossible to keep your mind focused on what you want to focus on. Just like parents are taught to choose their battles with their children, you want to do the same thing with the people and situations you face daily.

For example, you might not agree with a conversation that is happening between your coworker and your boss, but if you are not part of the conversation it’s best to stay out of it. If you choose to involve yourself you could be putting yourself in a position of choosing sides, putting your job at risk, and adding stress that you don’t want in your life.

  1. Make time to journal.

Journaling is a great way to release those thoughts that are bogging down your mind. You can write out your stresses and worries and then once they are out of your head, release them altogether. Some people like to rip up or burn the paper as a symbolic way of showing that they are letting go of those thoughts.

Journaling also helps you to process through situations and see things in a different light. Take the time to write about your day, learn from it, and move on from it.

  1. Incorporate times of silence and solitude into your schedule.

Constantly being in the hustle and bustle of life is a sure-fire way to lose peace of mind and focus. This doesn’t mean that you should avoid people at all costs, however, taking time to get away from everyone else and be in total silence can help you to reconnect with yourself. If you find that you have lost all peace, you might need to take a solitude retreat. You could get away for a weekend alone or simply an afternoon. Find a quiet place to retreat to. Allow yourself to think about the thoughts that have been rolling around in your head. Then, decide how to deal with those thoughts. Allow yourself to recharge during this time.

Sometimes it can be difficult to realize what we are thinking and how those thoughts are impacting us. If you are struggling to obtain peace of mind you could benefit from a conversation with a local therapist. They know the right questions to ask to help you get to the root of your struggle. Then, they can provide you with actionable steps to help you find and live in peace.

      Why are you in your field of work? Who inspired your career journey? Remembering your influencers can have a powerful motivational effect on your daily routine.

        The number one reason why people fail to achieve their goals and are almost permanently disappointed by their results is a lack of motivation.

        You simply cannot lose weight consistently over time and build your fitness if you are not motivated enough to stick to your programme.

        Reading this post will give you 7 hardcore tips on how to stay motivated on your fitness programme.

        1. Set measurable and achievable goals.

        A lot of people get into exercise after making the realisation that they’re unhappy with their weight/health. They’re not sure exactly what they want to achieve but they do know that they don’t want to remain overweight and out of shape.

        While this realisation is a great starting point. You need to have an exact vision of what you want to achieve. Perhaps you want to go down two belt sizes, or for women a specific dress size. Having a mental picture of your ideal physique helps a lot! Most importantly, it should be achievable.

        The exact vision gives you a precise idea of what you’re going for and motivates you to keep working out.

        After setting you main goal, e.g. get to 180lb bodyweight by summer in order to look good in shorts. You should set milestones in 4 week intervals to measure and check your progress to make sure you’re on track. Attack your goal using bite-sized milestones, e.g. lose 10lbs per month.

        Set your goal and put your blinders on, don’t look back.

        Give yourself a treat for achieving your goals, I’m a gadget freak. I told myself that I needed to do 150reps on the 10 minute snatch test, as a reward I’d buy myself an iPhone 4S. It was a helluva motivator and I did it!

        2. Find a training partner.

        If you’re working out by yourself all the time, it can be easy to make excuses and skip workouts from time to time. Your motivation levels will go up and down all the time. When you reach your low points it can be really enticing to throw in the towel and stay home and watch a movie while eating ice cream.

        A training partner can help kick your butt in gear. Friendly competition and rivalry helps maintain motivation. You can help each other out on your low points as well. If one person is making excuses the other can help to snap out of it.

        If you can’t find a training partner another great way to get the same effect is to commit yourself to achieving your goals by explaining them to a trusted loved one. It works a bit like a pledge or an oath. Psychologically you don’t want to seem like a failure or let someone else down, so you will try hard to stick to your pledge. They can also hold you to account if you’re not progressing.

        3. Absolute commitment in the first few weeks of your programme.

        Carl Daikeler of BeachBody says that the most common time for people to quit their programme is between the 2 week to 4 week period, also known as “the wall”. That’s when someone is most likely to give up training. But if you get through that first 4 weeks chances are you will stick with the programme for the long term.

        So here’s what you need to do. When you start a new programme or start exercising after a long layoff. Commit yourself for the first 30 days. No matter how painful or difficult it may seem, do not quit. Stick to your programme, and after 30 days of regular training it will be habitual to you and will become super easy.

        4. Make workouts fun with variations

        The biggest reason why people quit training is mediocrity. They get tired of doing the same thing over and over again. Hence why people who just run on the treadmill for fitness end up being the first ones to quit (usually).

        The best thing to do, is stick to a workout for 4 weeks and then change you workouts a little. It’s also important to do that to drive through your plateaus as well. Your body adapts to exercises over time, and stops making gains so you need to shock your body by altering your programme.

        Most importantly, make sure the workouts are interesting and fun. It’s no good forcing yourself to do an exercise that you feel is torture. It must be engaging and fun to do.

        Adding a social dimension by taking kettlebell classes adds tremendously.

        5. Keep a journal

        Always record your workouts, you can print out your logs from the Kettlebell Basics 101 Manual. But it’s much more preferable to keep a log on a spreadsheet so you can track your progress.

        Blogging your workouts can help tremendously too. If you don’t have a high traffic blog, an alternative method is to join a popular forum based on your goals (e.g. fat loss, fitness, strength gain) and create a workout log thread.

        The point of the blog isn’t just to record your progress, the point is to get encouragement from others and reach out.

        6. Don’t overextend yourself.

        Remember to pace yourself and challenge yourself within your range of abilities. If you push yourself too hard you might get put off. On the flip side if you don’t challenge yourself enough and keep improving you may get bored and quit (read point 4).

        Don’t force your life to fit around your workout, fit your workout around your life. Exercise at a time that suits you some people prefer evenings, some people prefer mornings, other people even work out during their lunch! The point is everyone is different so cater to your individual needs.

        7. Do it to feel good not to look good.

        Edward Deci, Ph. D., a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, says that working out to lose weight for a partner or other third party reasons are not a strong enough motivator for the long term. You must exercise because YOU want to do it for yourself. Also studies have shown that those who exercised to feel good rather than look good ended up sticking to their programme for longer.

        You are so right. I am just getting started again after serious surgery.

        I am an older woman ad have battled my weight for years. I made a commitment to myself this year to “get healthy”. So I ave been working with the keetle bells now since Jan 4th. I am 56 years old over weight and out of shape. when I started to do the kettle bells I really started off slow… I allowed myself to make small goals to acheive for the first time in my life and was making a lot progress. I worked myself up finally to 6 days work out and am so proud of myself and actually am loving the work outs.(I am even shocked how much I really do enjoy doing them) I have a guestion though. I have gotten a really bad cold and stopped working out due to sorethroat and slight fever that lasted a week so no work out for that week.. it took me two weeks to get back to where I was and got sick again with the same bug from my husband who caught it from me… so anohter week out of work out…but I apromise myself to get back as soon as possible. Can you tell me when is a good time to get back to it? I want to keep up th emotivation I gained and I am actually feeling so bad about missing my workouts at the monent. Can you help on how do I get through this? thank you!!

        You’re fine to work out from the the “bouceback” phase if your bug, basically during the end of your cold you might have a odd sniffles but your energy levels are good. That is the phase when you’re body is essentially fighting off the cold (and winning). But do not go too intense as it may tire out your immune system and cause the cold to come back. You should take it light and not over exert yourself.

        When you return back to training your fitness isn’t going to be up to par to your pre illness levels, just bear that in mind. It will take time for your central nervous system and immune system to get up to par.

        I have been working out for almost all my life, im 52 now and im overweight and tired. I have no motivation neither i have energy. My husband calls my fat and that infuriates me makes me not want to do a thing and i dont i know i am only hurting myself because i hate who i have become, but i can make myself work out anymore….

        Having a clear work area helps you mainly by removing distractions and reducing your stress levels. Having everything prepared and organized also puts you in a mindset of control and confidence which promotes productivity – as opposed to clutter, which takes away these benefits.

        I believe most of us have days where we just cannot quite make ourselves stay “in the zone”. We find ourselves staring at the computer and all of a sudden “wake up” and realize that we have done nothing for several minutes. Or, we have a to do list that is quite long and at the end of the day nothing is crossed off so tomorrow looks bleak before it even starts.         The reality for most of us is that we have some time wasting habits that if we identify them, focus on them and then change them we could most certainly improve our quality of life – first at the office and ultimately in our entire life.

        Let’s explore 7 simple habits for improving your focus in the firm:

        Manage Time Better at Work

        How would you grade yourself when asked about your time management habits? I do not mean only the to-do list and action steps. Those are must haves. You can have them and yet still not stay focused at work. One of the main reasons is because you get distracted by white noise. White noise consists of all of the ongoing communications that clutter your time including emails, Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter and web surfing. To make it worse are temptations of web links sent by friends which may or may not be related to work. What about instant messaging and those old fashioned voice mails and calls? How do you expect to stay focused when there are so many distractions?

        Shut these down and see how your focus immediately gets better. We all realize that these are vital business communications, so allocate a time of the day to indulge in these. Take the challenge for one day – shut down all incoming correspondence including phone, Outlook and Internet during the day and only check it at 10:00 am, 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Allow yourself only a 15 minute window to respond and then shut it all down again. I think you will be amazed at the amount of work you will accomplish.

        Get the Small Tasks Out of the Way

        Small little tasks that you think you can put off and come back to later? Time has an uncanny way of catching up. There will always be fire to put out. Big or small, these will steal time away from you being able to complete the small tasks. For example, if someone pops in an email to ask for an answer which you have immediately, just reply it and get it out of the way.

        Try adding the estimated time that you think a task will take to your personal task list. Then, when you find that you have 5 or 10 minutes between scheduled phone calls or large projects that you are working on, look through your task list for those small things that you can do quickly. Crossing off the little things will give you confidence and help you focus on the larger projects that need your attention.

        Take Short Breaks

        Most of us have a misconception that the best way to focus is to jump in and say, “OK, I will sit, focus and accomplish this project, no matter how long it takes.” Your reality is that you need breaks. So take short – not long – breaks throughout the day. Research shows that these mini-time outs actually help with our ability to focus more clearly.

        Try taking a 5 to 10 minute stretch break every 90 minutes. Stand up, stretch, take a quick walk around the building. The idea is to wake yourself up and get the blood pumping to your brain so your laser focus will engage again.

        Start Early

        There are many who say that you are either a morning person or a late night person, however I am convinced that this is a choice you make, and making the choice to get an early start is a good one to aid in the area of focus. I recommend this, when you start your day early you clear out a lot of things before everyone starts to come in and disturbances starts. It’s a good time to clear emails, check your task list for the day, make coffee and read the online newspaper.

        One caution on this focus tip, if you make the choice to start your day early, and want some alone time to really focus on the day ahead, make sure you communicate that with others. If everyone starts early, you could find yourself in team conversations and fall right back into interruption mode rather than a productive start to your day.

        Prevent Procrastination

        Most of us have that project, client call, performance review or something that we just keep pushing to the following day. As the Nike advertisement says “Just Do It”. While this is a bit cliché, the reality is that it works tremendously well. Don’t wait and don’t give yourself any excuses. You can get very good with excuses after a while and things gets pushed and pushed. How can you stay focused when there are always things that will bother you?

        Try this – start working on a project that you have been allowing yourself to push back. As you complete the task, you will most assuredly find yourself having a clearer mind, feeling more confident and the focus you have on other projects will get much better.

        Stop the Break Room Chats and Cubicle Conversations

        I can just imagine some of the owners, managers and supervisors who are reading this saying “GREAT tip”, but be very careful as you implement. Handle this situation with care. You want to increase focus and productivity, but you do not want to decrease motivation, communication and comradery among your team. We spend more time with our co-workers than we do with our families, and the last thing you want to do is treat your firm like a sweat shop.

        As you encourage relationships and discourage too much chatter, make sure you are present by walking through the office occasionally to ensure that you are not just talking a good game, but also “acting your expectations”. If you see – or if you are – the person that is spending too much time at the water cooler, resist making a new policy for everyone and address the issue one on one with the person directly.

        Attack the Dreaded To-Do List

        The best to do list is the one that you will use! Outlook, excel, project management system, CRM, or the legal pad can all be effective. Use the system you develop and knock off the things you don’t like to do first. Don’t over commit, and if you realize you are over your head ask for help or delegate to someone who has a passion or technical expertise in that area.
